The AIA's Objectives are to:

  • Provide a forum for member associations to discuss issues of common interest and to formulate agreed positions.
  • Develop shared resources between associations with a view to minimising the duplication of effort for staff members.
  • Promote the sharing of non-competitive information to assist all member associations and hence their member companies in keeping abreast with current issues, both national and international.
  • Streamline and co-ordinate lobbying activities as appropriate.
  • Liaise with other industry associations and to seek their support and assistance as appropriate.
  • Convene task forces or working groups drawing on expertise from member associations to develop and promote common positions.
  • Work closely with the relevant international trade associations.

Through working to meet its objectives, the AIA enables the associations which represent companies operating in many sectors of the chemical industry supply chain to have a strong voice with UK Government and in Europe on issues of common concern. Issues which have been or are being addressed by the AIA include REACH (the European Chemicals Regulation) and indoor air quality. The AIA considers all UK and European Union legislation which affects the businesses of the member associations’ companies.

The AIA promotes the interests of the industry in discussions with UK Government departments and the regulators, as appropriate to the issues, including DTI, Defra, the Department for Transport, the Treasury, the Cabinet Office, the Health and Safety Executive and the Environment Agency.

When the UK Chemicals Stakeholder Forum (CSF) was restructured in late 2004, the AIA became a member. The role of the AIA at CSF meetings is to represent the broad spectrum of interests of the industries on issues affecting all member associations’ companies. To allow representation on specific issues, all AIA member associations can also attend CSF meetings and can contribute in turn to agenda items of interest. Through its membership of the CSF, the AIA is able to engage with Government and representatives of other organisations, including NGOs, retailers and consumers.
